A 25-year-old Hilo man died Sunday from injuries he suffered in a July 23 vehicle crash on South Point Road, approximately 5.5 miles south of Kamaoa Road, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification, police said.
Responding to an 8:47 a.m. call, Ka‘u patrol officers determined the victim was driving a 2001 Mercury sedan north on South Point Road when he ran off the right side of the road, lost control, struck a utility pole and overturned several times.
The victim was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken by helicopter to Kona Community Hospital. He died at 9:25 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 21st traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 15 at this time last year.
